Clare’s Inspiring Book Week at the International School of Toulouse

The Challenge:

During the annual Book Week at the International School of Toulouse, I aimed to create a meaningful experience for primary school students that went beyond just celebrating literature. The challenge was to find an engaging way to encourage young learners to prioritise their mental well-being while nurturing a love for reading. The school needed a program that resonated with both their educational framework and the students’ emotional needs.

What I Did:

After understanding the school’s goals, I aligned my visit with their commitment to holistic education, as outlined by their values, creativity, curiosity, integrity and resilience, and their IB curriculum. My visit was designed not just to entertain, but to empower students to openly discuss their feelings and recognise the importance of mental well-being. I incorporated my book series, “The Little Paws Hotel” and “The Animorals,” into the (curriculum) workshops, connecting the stories with various topics that resonated with both students and teachers. Through interactive sessions, I encouraged students to explore values like empathy, kindness, respect and gratitude, (curiosity, and open-mindedness,) while also sparking their imagination through storytelling.

The Outcome:

The school later informed me that I was the highlight of their Book Week. My ability to engage with the students and seamlessly integrate my stories into their curriculum enriched their understanding of literature and heightened their awareness of emotional well-being. The experience left a lasting impression, inspiring the students to become thoughtful and compassionate individuals.

My connection with ‘Speaking of Books’ provides the school with an easy way to invite me back for future events, ensuring that I can continue to support the development of their students. I look forward to future collaborations!
